Power and infrastructure

Africa Energy Forum 2018

Now in its 20th year, the Africa Energy Forum (AEF) is a global investment meeting for Africa’s power, energy, infrastructure and industrial sectors. It brings together senior-level stakeholders from across the energy sector to form partnerships, identify opportunities and collectively move the industry forward.

As power and infrastructure is a key sector for Standard Bank, we are once again taking up the opportunity to sponsor the AEF as a key FSP. To support this, a delegation of senior members of our power and infrastructure sector team will attend and participate, including:

  • Rentia van Tonder, Head of Power at Standard Bank, who will be part of a panel discussion on Renewable Energy
  • Steve Barnes: Building the Foundation – Energy Infrastructure
  • Jonathan Muga - Kenya session

We have a long-standing track record of working with relevant players across the power value chain to drive progress in Africa, including advising major power utilities. We have diverse experience across hydro-powered, natural gas-fired, coal-fired, nuclear and combined heat power stations, and have become renewable energy project leaders across solar, wind, and waste-to-energy projects. Increasingly, we are working with clients and partners in diversifying the energy mix and investments, including off-grid solutions.

Driving development

Power is the single biggest driver of economic growth and competition in emerging markets. As these economies grow, so too does their need for infrastructure such as ports, railways, roads, airports, hospitals and schools. Addressing these needs can present a number of challenges, including volatile fuel prices and exchange rates, rising construction costs, along with social and environmental concerns.

Presence and expertise

Our specialist teams in Johannesburg, London and Beijing are experienced in securing finance or refinancing any power and infrastructure transaction, and to structure solutions that will ensure minimal risk and volatility. As a leading bank in Africa, Standard Bank can advise all our clients on transactions, whether from the perspective of an investor, contractor or equipment supplier.
