Sponsorships

Overview

Sponsorships are a valuable part of Standard Bank Group's social responsibility and marketing communication strategies. Sponsorships are essential in building the brand and creating relevance in markets where Standard Bank Group operates, and they provide a platform for us to engage with our customers.

Development is key to our deciding on what sponsorships we undertake. Currently, we look at initiatives that support community upliftment, the arts and sport.

Sponsorships vary from country to country and are often decided on by teams in each country in which we operate, as relevant to their marketing objectives

Uniting Africa through football

A major pan-African sponsorship is football and we have an eight-year deal in place with the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Standard Bank Group is the official financial services sponsor to the following events or tournaments:\

  • Orange Africa Cup of Nations - biannually: 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015
  • Orange African Youth Championship (Under20) - biannually: 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015
  • Orange CAF Confederations Cup - annually: 2009 to 2016
  • Orange CAF Champions League - annually: 2009 to 2016

Our decision to partner with CAF over an eight year period was driven by Standard Bank Group's growing presence as a leading emerging markets bank on the African continent, and at the same time an appropriate key sponsorship as the bank that has the largest banking presence in Africa. Through this sponsorship, we aim to position Standard/Stanbic Bank as the leading African bank.

Arts and culture

Our commitment to South African (and African) arts and culture is wide-ranging. The main focus areas include:

The Standard Bank Gallery, showcases a variety of South African, and international artists on an ongoing basis.

Our association and involvement in the three key jazz festivals, held in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Grahamstown, not only contributes to the growth of the musical genre in South Africa, it also assists in attracting many jazz enthusiasts and at the same time positions South African musicians among credible international line-ups.

HIV/Aids programme among top 20 in the world

Standard Bank recently received a commendation for business excellence from the 2006 Global Business Coalition on HIV/Aids for the bank's HIV/Aids workplace programme.

Technical Manager for the coalition, Celina Gorre, said the bank's hard work and dedication in the fight against Aids in the workplace put the programme among the 20 finest in the world. Standard Bank will be among those mentioned in the Global Business Coalition Annual Awards publication as a programme "in which we see great potential for the future".

Sipho Ngidi, Standard Bank's Director of Corporate Human Resources accepted the commendation at the Annual Awards Gala event in London. Speakers at the event included British Prime Minister Tony Blair, European Commission President Jose Manuel Borroso and Graca Machel, Founder and President of the Foundation for Community Development in Mozambique.

"This commendation is testimony to the difference our staff makes through their involvement in the HIV/Aids programme," says Sipho.

Pumas sponsorship – Argentina

Standard Bank Argentina has been the official banking sponsor of the Rugby Union of Argentina (UAR) and the national team "Los Pumas" since June 2008.

The association with Argentinean rugby grows from strength to strength, more so with the opportunities to link our sponsorship of the team to a high profile international event that attracts global support and recognition amongst rugby fans.

Standard Bank's African roots are well known, but it has strong operations or partnerships across the world's emerging markets, and this event provides a great platform for us to communicate this.
