Our credit cards also come with many free features, such as MyUpdates SMS alerts, lost card protection, basic travel insurance, Internet Banking, app banking and telephone banking.

Your credit card gives you a safe way to make transactions, both locally and abroad. All you need to do is follow a few basic precautions, such as:

  • Guard your PIN
  • Register for free SMS MyUpdates
  • Keep your eyes open at an ATM

But we're always here to help you if something does go wrong. The moment your card is lost or stolen, or if you believe your personal details (like your PIN) may have been revealed, call our Lost Card Division immediately on 0800 020 600.


Please have your card number or identity number handy and make a note of the reference number given to you by Customer Care.

Your replacement card will have a new card number. If you have debit orders against your card account, you will need to give your new card number to the debit order recipients.

To track your case, please call our Financial Crime Division on 010 249 0017. You will need to use the reference number given to you by the Lost Card Division.

Lost Card Protection is a free service that protects you against loss caused by fraudulent use of your card if it is lost or stolen up to 24 hours prior to first reporting of the event to the bank.

Lost Card Protection does not cover transactions in which your PIN was used.

Once you report your card as lost or stolen, our Lost Card Division will issue you with a reference number, which you need to give to our Financial Crime Division in the event of fraudulent transactions appearing on your card account.

To track your case, please call our Financial Crime Division on 010 249 0017 with the reference number given to you by the Lost Card Division.

Please note:

  • You are not protected against transactions in which your PIN is used.
  • You may not be protected if you fail to report the loss of your card as soon as possible, or if you compromised your card details to a third party, depending on the circumstances.
  • You will be liable for any fraudulent transactions that have not been reported within 60 days from the date of transaction.
  • If you have two cards and one of them is reported lost, do not use the additional card. If your card is linked to a garage card, don’t use your garage card until a new number has been allocated to you.

Credit cards are a safe way to make payments, provided you take some basic precautions.

You will use your same credit card PIN at ATMs and point of sale terminals. As with ATM withdrawals, make sure nobody sees you entering your PIN at the till. If you feel uncomfortable, stop the transaction and ask for your card.

Don’t tell anyone your PIN. You are responsible for all transactions where your PIN was used.

If you feel that your PIN is no longer secret and secure, head to your closest Standard Bank branch or Standard Bank AutoBank and select a new PIN of your choice.

This instant messaging system notifies you every time money leaves your account. This can provide you with peace-of-mind that you will always know the activity of your funds.
It will also allow you to identify transactions that you have not made.

If you notice anything strange, such as a payment or transfer you did not authorise, then call us immediately on 0861 201 000.
That way, you can prevent losing all your money to a criminal.

  • Stand close to the ATM.
  • Don't let anyone distract you.
  • If someone moves close to you after you your card, press ‘Cancel’ and take your card. Don’t enter your PIN.
  • Check your card before you leave the ATM to make sure it’s yours.
  • If you need help, ask a Standard Bank staff member. Don't accept help from strangers.
  • Never give anyone your PIN to anyone, including bank employees.
  • If you feel uncomfortable at an ATM, cancel your transaction and leave.
  • Don’t withdraw cash in deserted places.
  • Never let your card out of your sight.
  • Don’t leave your card lying around.
  • If you can’t find your card, report it immediately by calling our Lost Card Division: 0800 020 600.
  • To ensure that your card is always accepted, pay your account on or before the due date every month.

Counterfeit cards

Fraudsters can duplicate your card, which they use to make illegal transactions on your account. They do this by 'skimming' (copying) your card details with a device placed in the ATM. To get your PIN, they will either place a camera somewhere, or watch you while you type in your PIN. Keep the ATM keypad covered when you enter your PIN.

Card swapping

Fraudsters will often pretend to help you when an ATM ‘swallows’ your card. They will mislead you into believing that your card is still in the ATM, when in fact they’ve already snapped it up and watched you enter your PIN.

Never let any stranger help you at an ATM. If someone interrupts you, cancel the transaction immediately and leave. Make sure you have your card with you.

Online purchases without a card

Nowadays, fraudsters don’t need to have your physical card to make fraudulent transactions. They can make online purchases with only your card details. Keep your card details secret. Always keep your card with you and never lose sight of it.

Travelling overseas

Our new 'Use Card Abroad' functionality on the App allows you to activate your credit cards for overseas travel and notify us of your travel dates in advance.

By notifying us we can continue to monitor your account without making a call referral to authenticate a purchase you make.

With your MasterCard credit card you can:

  • Make purchases anywhere you see the Mastercard® sign.
  • Complete safe and easy purchases, thanks to secure chip and PIN features that keep you in full control of how much you pay ̶ and to whom.
  • Use a budget facility for purchases and cash advances of R 200 or more.
  • Shop online with confidence, thanks to 3D Secure technology which verifies your details during a purchase.
  • Withdraw cash at any Standard Bank branch or ATM where you see a MasterCard®, Maestro® or Cirrus® sign.

Use your card locally and internationally at 30 million merchants, or indeed wherever you see the MasterCard® sign.

In-store purchases

A chip- and PIN-enabled card doubles your card security. Chip cards are extremely difficult to copy – and with your secret PIN only you get to use your card.

  • When you’re ready to pay, give the card to the cashier who will insert it into the card reader (if they have a chip-enabled device).
  • While the card is in the reader, check that the transaction amount is correct. Enter your PIN on the PIN pad to authorise the transaction. If your card is removed before you enter your PIN, the transaction will be cancelled.
  • If the merchant is not chip enabled the cashier will swipe the card through the card reader. You will be asked for your signature, as you do with a magstripe credit card.If you have a contactless card, simply tap your credit card within 5cm of the terminal at the point of sale wherever you see a MasterCard® PayPass or the PayPass logo. If your purchase is over R 500 you will need to tap and enter your PIN.
  • For added security, cover the terminal keypad as you enter your PIN.
  • The cashier will give you a duplicate of the slip with your receipt.
  • Keep the slip and check it against your monthly statement.

Use the budget facility for purchases and cash advances of R 200 or more. You can repay the amount over six to 60 months.

  • You can buy as many items as you need on your budget facility, as long you have credit available on your account.
  • The only purchases you can’t make with your budget facility are traveller's cheques and foreign currency, progressive payments such as bond instalments, petrol purchases and electronic account payments.
  • Budget instalments must be fully repaid every month. To make it easier for you to manage, the amount is included in the minimum payment due – so that you don't have to worry about making additional payments into your budget facility.
  • Budget purchases are subject to interest from the date of the purchase.
  • Budget facility purchases are listed separately in your monthly statements.

3D Secure verifies your personal details during an online purchase, prior to a transaction being completed.

  • Every time you buy something online you’ll receive a unique OTP via SMS or email. This ensures that the transaction is being made by you, the cardholder.
  • When making an online purchase, you will be asked for your:
    • Credit card number
    • Card expiry date
    • The last three numbers of your card validation code (CVC). You can find your CVC on the back of your credit card.

You can withdraw cash from your credit card account – locally and internationally – at any Standard Bank branch or ATM where you see the MasterCard®, Maestro or Cirrus sign. Remember that interest on cash withdrawals is calculated from the date of the transaction.

Personal identification number (PIN)

  • To get your card PIN, call our Card Division on 0861 201000 or visit any Standard Bank branch with your identity book and credit card.
  • To personalise your PIN, visit any Standard Bank branch or use any Standard Bank ATM.
  • Memorise your PIN. Do not write it down and never tell anyone what it is.
  • If you can’t memorise your PIN, keep a note of it in a safe place – but not with your card. If your card is lost, stolen or used without your permission you may be held liable for transactions using your PIN.

Managing your credit card should not be complicated. All you need to do is review your credit card statement to check the minimum payment amount, as well as the date on which it’s due. Keep in mind that if your minimum monthly payment is not made on time, you will be charged a fee.
You can have your statement delivered by post or email ̶ it's your choice.


We combined revolving and budget credit limits – so now you can decide how you want to use your card.

Our cards have a single credit limit which you can use either as a straight or a budget credit limit. This means that you have the freedom to choose to spend in any combination of straight and budget purchases up to your total limit.

Increasing your account credit limit

  • You can apply for a credit limit increase six months after your get your card, and every six months thereafter.
  • Any increase will be based on your card account and your credit history.
  • To apply for an increase, call us on 0861 201 000.

Temporary limit increase

  • If you need a higher credit limit for a specific period, you can apply for a temporary increase.
  • The limit will revert to its original level at the end of the specified period.
  • To apply for a temporary increase, call us on 0861 201 000.
  • Your credit card statement shows the minimum payment amount, as well as the date on which it is due.
  • The minimum payment is 3% of the outstanding balance or R 25 – whichever is greater – plus any budget instalments. The exception is our MasterCard Blue Online (unembossed) Credit Card, where the minimum payment is 10% of the outstanding balance or R 100, whichever is the greater, plus any budget instalments.
  • The minimum payment for an Access Credit Card is mandatory and is calculated at 3% of the credit limit or R 25, whichever is greater.
  • if your minimum monthly payment is not made on time, you will be charged a late payment fee. Check our credit card pricing guide (PDF) for details.
  • Statements are sent monthly as posted statements or e-statements sent directly to your e-mail address. If you do not receive a statement, please call us on 0861 201 000 or if your postal or e-mail address has changed, please inform us immediately.
  • You can obtain an interim statement at any Standard Bank ATM, branch, or via Internet banking.
  • Check your statements each month to make sure that all transactions were made by you or with your authority, and that all payments are shown.

New ways to pay

Tap to Pay Contactless
With contactless cards you can make easier, faster and safer purchases using an antenna embedded in your Standard Bank Credit Card. Making payments with a contactless card is safer because your card never leaves your hand. (If you tap, you don’t swipe or dip).

After the cashier rings up the amount to be paid, simply tap your credit card within 5cm of the terminal at the point of sale wherever you see a MasterCard® PayPass sign.

MasterPass stores all your payment cards (both debit and credit) and shipping information in one convenient place: your smartphone. You create an account only once. After that you’ll skip checkout forms forever.

Using MasterPass:

  • Sign up: Download the app, enter your personal and billing information in once and create a unique password.
  • Shop: When shopping online look for the MasterPass checkout button. Click on the MasterPass logo. A QR code will then be displayed on your screen. Simply scan the QR code or capture the reference number beneath the QR code. If you are using a MasterPass-enabled app or accessing the site on your mobile device, this information will be automatically included, so there is no need to scan a QR code.
  • Pay: You will either be asked to enter your bank card ATM PIN or an OTP, and the last three digits as they appear at the back of your card.
  • Deliver: Select your delivery address, after which your purchase is now complete!

SnapScan is a simple smartphone app that lets you use your phone to pay for things in-store.

Using SnapScan:

  • Snap: Open the SnapScan app and use your phone’s camera to scan the SnapCode displayed at the checkout or with your bill. Tap on ‘Scan’ to identify the shop.
  • Pay: Enter the amount you want to pay and confirm payment with your secure 4-digit PIN.
  • Go: That's it. You're done. Your card never leaves your wallet!

Are you planning to travel abroad? You can now activate your cheque or credit card so you can safely use it while travelling.

In future we will add extra card features to the App, giving you more ways to manage your card – such as changing ATM withdrawal limits and temporarily / permanently deactivating your card while travelling.

When you purchase your public conveyance travel tickets with your Standard Bank credit card you receive automatic basic cover and have the option to take up additional cover at preferential rates.

Credit Card Protection Plan

Cover the debt on your Standard Bank credit card in the event of your death, disability, critical illness, or retrenchment.


  • You are 18 years of age or older
  • Pays the outstanding balance on your card as at date of event excluding arrears in the event of your death or permanent disability, or if you are diagnosed with a dread disease up to a maximum of R 120 000
  • Pays your credit card instalments for up to 6 months if you are retrenched
