During the investment period, the performance of an investment can be determined as follows:
Current Top 40 Level - Tranche JSE Top 40 Entry level * 100%
Tranche JSE Top 40 Entry level

The performance will fluctuate over the investment period due to daily changes in the JSE Top 40 level, and the final investment performance will only be determined at maturity.

Here is an example of how it works:

12 month investment:
Mr. Smith deposits R50 000 into a SharePlus investment account for Tranche 8 on 17 March 2015. The investment period begins on 29 April 2015. The money he put in the account, prior to the investment date will earn the prevailing Money Market call rate (current rate of 4.75 %). This interest will be capitalised to the amount deposited and will be invested on 29 April 2015.

Interest earned prior to the investment date: R50 000@ 4.75% * 43/365 = R279.79

Total amount invested on 29 April 2015 is R50 000 + R279.79 = R50 279.79

At the end of 12 month investment period, the growth is calculated as follows:

*If the JSE Top 40 Index performs at 8%
Interest earned during the investment period: R50 279.79 * 8% = R 4022.38 Total at end of investment period: R50 279.79 + R4022.38 = R54 302.17 (over 12months)

* If the JSE Top 40 Index performs at 16%
Interest earned during the investment period R50 279.79 *12% = R6033.57 (Remember maximum return is 12%)

Total at end of investment period: R50 279.79 + R6033.57= R56 313.36(over 12months)

* If the JSE Top 40 Index shows no gains
Total at end of investment period: R50 279.79(no return)

18 month investment:
Mr. Smith deposits R50 000 into a SharePlus investment account for Tranche 8 on 18 March 2015. The investment period begins on 14 May 2015. The money he put in the account, prior to the investment date will earn the prevailing Money Market call rate (current rate of 4.75%) This interest will be capitalised to the amount deposited and will be invested on 14 May 2015.

Interest earned prior to the investment date: R50 000@ 4.75% * 57/365 = R370.89

Total amount invested on 14 May 2015 is R50 000 + R370.89 = R50 370.89

At the end of the 18 month investment period, the growth is calculated as follows:
Where the Closing Level is equal to or higher than the Entry Level quoted on your Investment Letter and the Standard Bank website. Interest will be calculated as follows:

  • R50 370.89× 13% = R6548.21; and

Total Investment return will be as follows:

  • R6548.21 + R50 370.89 = R56 919.10

Where the Closing Level is less than the Entry Level quoted on your Investment Letter:

  • You will not earn Interest; and
  • Your Total Investment Return will be as follows: R50 370.89
