Standard Bank Group has received the Leadership in Arts Award at the CNBC All Africa Business Leader Awards. In addition, Sim Tshabalala, Deputy Chief Excutive of the group and Chief Executive of Standard Bank South Africa, was presented with the Business Success in Africa Award.
The CNBC All Africa Business Leader Awards, this year held for the first time, honours leaders who are making a difference through innovation and inspiration in their industry sectors.
The Leadership in the Arts Award is presented to a company, organisation or individual who has consistently supported the growth of the arts as a valuable contribution to Africa's identity and artistic culture
The Leadership in Arts Awards recognised Standard Bank Group for being a loyal supporter of the annual National Arts Festival in Grahamstown since 1984; for "kick-starting" the annual Standard Bank Jazz Festival; for supporting young and upcoming artists through individual sponsorships and study programmes; and for preserving "some of South Africa's artistic heritage". This award was presented by CNBC Africa in collaboration with the Department of Arts and Culture.
The Business Success in Africa Award pays tribute to the chief executive officers and leaders in businesses and organisations that distinguish themselves through their growth and expansion activities in Africa.
Mr Tshabalala said the Business Success in Africa Award is "a great credit to the African continent, a great credit to the African people and a wonderful tribute to our clients and to our staff who toil day-in-and-day-out to meet our clients' needs".
Other award categories were Africa Business Leader of the Year; Africa Business Woman of the Year; and Africa Entrepreneur of the Year.
The judges included Yunus Suleman, chairman of KPMG South Africa; Godfrey Mutizwa, chief editor of CNBC Africa; Nic Binedell, founder and director of the Gordon Institute of Business Science; and Russel Loubser, chief executive of the Johannesburg Securities Exchange.
