Teaming up with Pick n Pay asap! to keep you Budget Savvy

It’s time to think about how you can adjust your own personal budget, starting in your kitchen. This March, we’re keeping you Budget Savvy by partnering with one of South Africa’s top retailers, Pick n Pay, to bring you exclusive deals and meals that help you stay within budget.

We want to keep budgeting bite-sized, so we’re applying Elizabeth Warren’s 50-30-20 rule to help South Africans shop their groceries within budget on the Pick n Pay asap! app. The rule recommends allocating 50% of your budget to needs, 30% to wants and 20% to your savings. We’ve thought of a way you can use it for your groceries.

The 50-30-20 rule doesn’t balance just your budget but your kitchen too. We’d recommend using it as follows (but remember, you can customise it to fit your needs):

50% proteins: Your proteins such as meat, poultry, vegan meats and eggs usually take up 50% of your budget.

30% dry ingredients: Everything from starches such as rice and pap to canned goods and soup ingredients fits here. They are cheaper than proteins and are priced to last.

20% fresh ingredients: Spruce it up with the freshest fruit and veggies. They need to be consumed more quickly, so it makes sense to spend a smaller portion on them.

Now that you’ve got this in mind, head over to our Budget Savvy section on the Pick n Pay asap! app to start shopping within your budget today.
