Stanbic Bank Uganda's commitment to a sustainable future
Stanbic Bank Uganda is actively shaping a sustainable future, and World Environment Month 2025 showcased our commitment to supporting environmentally friendly businesses and driving the transition to a low-carbon economy.
The theme of this year's World Environment Day, "United against Plastic Pollution," resonates deeply in Uganda, where plastic waste and deforestation pose significant challenges. We recognised the urgent need to combat plastic pollution and deforestation in Uganda and reaffirmed our commitment to environmental conservation with a donation of UGX 120 million to the Ministry of Water and Environment, which will fund sustainability initiatives nationwide.
Additionally, we actively support community initiatives such as the annual Run4Climate marathon, a flagship event of the Running out of Trees (ROOTS) campaign. This year, the bank provided a UGX 10 million sponsorship for the event, which promotes reforestation and raises awareness about the importance of environmental conservation. The event took place on 29 June and reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to encourage every Ugandan to plant at least 1 tree each year. According to recent statistics, Uganda lost 41.6% of its forest cover, leading to climate challenges that impact lives and livelihoods. Since 2020, ROOTS has been on a mission to restore Uganda's vital tree cover, aiming to plant 40 million trees every year.
In our internal operations, we have implemented digital banking platforms to reduce paper usage and partnered with Global Paper Limited to recycle paper waste into eco-friendly products. Our commitment to reducing plastic waste is also evident in our partnership with Coca-Cola Beverages Uganda through Plastics Recycling Industries in Nakawa. To date, we have recycled 97.86% of plastic waste generated by our operations, which adds up to over 9 200 kilograms.
Our commitment to green finance and integrating ESG standards across operations earned us the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) Environmental Sustainability Award for the second consecutive year. The annual NEMA Sustainability Awards reward organisations and individuals implementing innovative and impactful environmental initiatives while promoting the adherence to environmental regulations and standards.
As Africa’s largest bank by assets, we are committed to driving Africa’s sustainable growth and look forward to continuing to partner with initiatives that aim to do the same. Together, we can create a greener, healthier and more prosperous Africa for all, one initiative at a time.
