Standard Bank Group Legal is responsible for overseeing the setting and maintenance of appropriate legal standards, as well as establishing a competent legal advisory resource throughout the Standard Bank Group. We provide advice to the directors and senior executives of the Group, as well as full end-to-end accountability of the Group's Legal Risk policy. This entails developing to monitoring the policy, as well as training the relevant target audience in the Standard Bank Group. The legal function across the Group provides specialist, relevant and quality legal advice and services to all areas of the business, legal entity boards and governance committees.

Our expert team of legal advisors identify long-term risk exposure to support the business units and have specialist functions in managing potential risk and maximising revenue streams, by interpreting and evaluating legal information, including the drafting of related commercial contracts. The legal function also sets the legal risk appetite, within Standard Bank and legal entity parameters.

Irrespective of which business area our legal advisors are employed in, they deliver sustainable value to our stakeholders and serve our clients, to achieve their strategic objectives and goals, following a collaborative approach by sourcing the required expertise across the Legal function. We efficiently deliver value-based legal capabilities, by effectively managing the Group’s legal rights and liabilities and protect the reputation of the Group's brand.

The Group has Legal functional areas in 18 African countries, including South Africa. Its core legal communities of expertise include corporate legal (commercial, mergers and acquisitions, asset based finance, investment banking, transaction banking), financial instruments (global markets), intellectual property, dispute resolution (advisory services, customer dispute adjudication and litigation) as well as procurement. It supports four business units (Business and Commercial Banking, Corporate and Investment Banking, Insurance and Asset Management and Personal and Private Banking) as well as a range of Group and corporate functions. It also has an enablement capability advising and supporting the function on legal strategy and programme management, the Legal Toolbox, legal financial management, legal technology enablement, legal information management, reporting and analytics, as well as capability building.

Selection process

  • Shortlist: Our Talent Acquisition Specialist and relevant Hiring Manager review all applications and make a shortlist of the most suitable candidates.
  • Competency- based interview: If you’re shortlisted, we’ll invite you to take part in a competency-based interview.
  • Assessments: If you’re successful in with the interview, you’ll move on to the assessments. Depending on the role you’re applying for, you might be asked to undertake a case-study exercise, technical test, and psychometric assessment, as well as any other role-specific assessment.
  • Panel- interview: Then you’ll proceed to final interview stage, where you’ll meet an interview panel and get to ask further questions.

Pre-employment screening

If you have been successful in the selection process, our Talent Acquisition team will get in touch to get your consent for our pre-employment screening which includes the following:
 

  • Identity and educational qualification verification
  • Credit record and criminal record
  • Outside Business Interest Declaration and Personnel Account Trading Declaration
  • Sanctions screening and confirmation of current employment.

Offer

Candidates with satisfactory pre-employment screening will be presented to the Hiring Manager by the Talent Acquisition team for final review. The most suitable candidate will be extended an employment contract and offer letter, detailing everything you’ll need to know about your new role. The recruitment process is competitive, therefore candidates that make it to the pre-employment screening stage are not guaranteed an offer.
