Standard Bank expands digital loans in Africa, offering accessible and convenient financial solutions.
The driving forces behind our digital lending initiatives in Africa are simplicity and accessibility: let customers access loans where they want. Whether it's through an app, website or even just their phone, it's about putting customers first and giving them their time back.
Traditional lending models often involve lengthy paperwork, in-person branch visits and long approval times. All of this can be challenging and time consuming for customers. By going digital, we’re making banking more convenient and efficient; anyone is able to have access.
Our digital lending suite includes 2 core products:
- Unsecured Personal Loans (UPL): Designed for customers who need flexible loans for personal needs, from education to financing appliances or smaller assets, these loans are fully digital, with transparent terms, quick disbursement and fixed instalments, making it easier for our customers to manage their cash flows.
- Cash Advance: This short-term loan helps you cover unexpected expenses and bridge a gap in your finances.
These loans give customers confidence and make managing money easier. One of our customers in Malawi shared, “Whenever you have a loan offer (on your digital channel), you can get it instantly without even visiting the bank.”
Recognising that some customers need more options than just the app and website, we've also introduced digital loans via USSD. This ensures everyone can easily access loan options directly on their mobile, regardless of data or smartphone limitations.
This is a major milestone in our journey to make financial services more accessible, efficient and customer-centric. In 2025, our digital lending products empowered customers with more than 250 000 loans across East, West and Southern Africa (excl. South Africa), where our digital lending capability is available.
Our ambition doesn’t stop here. We’re actively working to expand our offerings through enhancements to better meet our clients’ needs.
